Welcome Alanna & Alexa as Directors of Canadian and US Chapter Development

June 5th, 2012: We would like to welcome two new full-time staff to Students Offering Support, Alanna Tobia and Alexa Mareschal. They will be entering the position, Director of Chapter Development, with Alanna as the managing director of all of Students Offering Support’s Canadian operations, while Alexa will be focused on growing and supporting operations across America.

Alanna Tobia | Director of Canadian Chapter Development

Alanna Tobia is a 2010 University of Guelph graduate in International Development. During her undergraduate degree she was involved in a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout Latin America. She dedicated much of her time in Guelph to a non-profit agency committed to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho, South Africa.

After completing her degree she pursued a post-graduate certificate in International Project Management. This business program sparked her interest in entrepreneurial approaches to development. After working as a Program Coordinator for a social services agency upon graduation, Alanna is excited to bring her experiences to the position of Director of Canadian Chapter Development

Alexa Mareschal | Director of US Chapter Development

Alexa completed her undergrad in biology at the University of California in San Diego. Throughout her undergrad, she developed a keen interest in business and, upon graduation, was given a position as the National Innovation Lead for PETCO. In this position, Alexa was responsible for implementing new and creative ideas to promote the company's under-developed training operations, affecting over 1,000 stores and 1,600 training associates across the country.

In fall 2011, Alexa moved to Toronto with her husband. She began volunteering with SOS in January of 2012 as the Chapter Development Manager and, when the opportunity to help expand SOS into the States presented itself, Alexa was happy to put her knowledge of the American university system and business development skills to the test.

We are very excited to add these two superstars to our headquarters team, helping support and develop the 2000 student volunteers next year to raise more marks, money, and roofs.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND: Students Offering Support (SOS, www.studentsofferingsupport.ca) is a charitable sustainable social venture that develops and supports SOS chapters residing within post-secondary schools across North America. Each University SOS chapter raises money to raise roofs through raising marks during our 'Exam-AID' group review sessions, taught and coordinated by student volunteers for university and high school students. Each year, the money raised is spent creating sustainable education projects in developing nations, built on annual outreach trips by volunteers. Since 2005, over 2,000 SOS volunteers have tutored over 25,000 students and raised more than $900,000 for various development projects across Latin America.
